Grandfather Mountain has a way of reminding you that nature writes its own script. From its cliffs the world opens wide, the valleys folding into each other like pages in an ancient book. On clear nights the sky feels close enough to touch, and every star carries the quiet promise of something larger than ourselves. This photograph was made there in 2019 during a star-chasing expedition with a long-time friend. What began as a calm, cloudless night shifted quickly. The sky darkened, the wind sharpened, and a winter storm swallowed the peak. We found ourselves trapped above the valleys as six inches of snow fell around us, covering the world in white. Our gear froze. Camera batteries died within moments. We tucked them under our arms to coax back a little warmth, sliding them into our cameras just long enough to capture a single frame before they shut down again. This image came from one of those rare, fleeting moments when everything still worked. A brief intersection of cold, chaos, and wonder.
